NEW ORLEANS – In a surprise move, Tyrann Mathieu has announced his retirement from the NFL. The announcement came Tuesday, just one day before the New Orleans Saints were set to begin training camp.

Mathieu, 33, retires after spending 12 seasons in the NFL. He played the last three years with the Saints and previously suited up for the Cardinals, Texans, and Chiefs.

Career Highlights and Impact

Nicknamed the “Honey Badger” during his college days at LSU, Mathieu built a reputation as a fearless and instinctive safety. In his NFL career, he recorded 36 interceptions, 11 sacks, and 15 total forced/recovered fumbles.

He was named First-Team All-Pro three times and selected to three Pro Bowls. He also played a key role in the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl LIV win in 2020.

“As I hang up my cleats, I’m filled with gratitude,” Mathieu wrote. “Football gave me purpose, discipline, and lifelong memories. But more than anything, it gave me a community.”

Mathieu played two standout seasons at LSU. He totaled 4 interceptions, 6 sacks, 16 pass deflections, and 19 forced/recovered fumbles in college. In 2011, he was named SEC Defensive Player of the Year and became a Heisman Trophy finalist.

Although he was dismissed before the 2012 season, Mathieu remained connected to LSU. In 2016, he donated $1 million to the program. A year later, LSU renamed the players’ lounge in his honor.

Saints GM Mickey Loomis confirmed the decision was recent and said he fully supports Mathieu. “He’s a legendary Louisiana and NFL player. I just wish him all the best,” Loomis said.
